The Associate Director of Learning Assessment and Evaluation will work collaboratively to develop and implement the assessment and evaluation of student learning, academic programs, curricula, and other educational practices at the University. In addition to evaluating impact on student learning, and institutional measures of success in teaching and learning, the Associate Director will also lead the analysis and evaluation of high impact practices. The ideal applicant will have experience with diverse methods for the direct assessment of student learning outcomes—especially ePortfolios, embedded course assignments, tests, etc.—indirect assessments of student learning, and be familiar with the application of learning analytics to assessment and evaluation practices. The Associate Director of Learning Assessment and Evaluation will report to the to Vice President for Academic Innovation & Effectiveness.

  • Provide expertise, leadership and assistance in the development, implementation and analysis of direct and indirect assessment of student learning outcomes at the level of the course, general education, degree program, and co-curricular activities.
  • Provide guidance and consult with faculty and program directors in articulating and measuring institutional, general education and program learning outcomes, e.g., via rubrics and other methodologies.
  • Work with program directors to develop, select and administer evaluation instruments, strategies, and rubrics to measure learning outcomes and the effectiveness of the curriculum, teaching activities and academic programs.
  • Prepare analysis, interpretation and reporting of assessment data.
  • Monitor the status of and provide assistance with the planning and coordination of accreditation reporting databases and reporting systems for each program area.
  • Support faculty in the design and execution of surveys and other evaluation instruments in support of ongoing and effectiveness evaluation projects.
  • Communicate effectively the evaluation and analysis of assessment activities and reports to non-expert audiences.
  • Participate in the University’s responses to external data requests from government agencies and other associations.

Qualifications & Special Instructions to Applicants

  • A master’s degree in a social science or education field with an emphasis on learning assessment and/or educational program evaluation, plus at least one-year of experience as a research associate in the area of academic assessment.
  • Experience in designing and implementing practices for direct and indirect measures of student learning outcomes in higher education, including ePortfolios, embedded course assignments, and tests, especially in the context of general education and academic programs.
  • Experience designing and implementing academic program evaluation approaches in higher education and assisting academic programs with the assessment portions of accreditation reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the analysis of learning assessment data, including applicable quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Required Skills:


  • Excellent written and oral communication and skills.
  • Superior strategic collaboration skills, including the ability to work within a team to identify opportunities, present ideas in cogent and open manner, and provide constructive feedback. 
  • Excellent computing skills including survey tools, data storage, database manipulation,platforms for assessment of course-based learning outcomes (e.g., Blackboard).
  • Demonstrated high level of independence, self-direction and motivation.
  • Experience with using ePortfolios to assess student learning.
  • Experience with learning analytics.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with data visualization tools, psychometrics, and experience foundation grants.
