Overview

Quinnipiac University's School of Medicine seeks a Laboratory Research Assistant. As an integral part of the School of Medicine's laboratory team, you will work closely and collaboratively with the Laboratory Manager as well as faculty investigators and medical students to conduct research experiments using a variety of research approaches including, but not limited to, molecular biological and biochemical techniques, tissue culture, and small animal model systems. You will also be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory including maintenance, ordering supplies and experimentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Laboratory Manager in conducting experiments using comprehensive knowledge of relevant science
  • Order and prepare laboratory chemical stocks and reagents
  • Maintain overall laboratory organization and inventory, including chemical inventory and placement
  • Prepare for laboratory inspections
  • Operate and engage in general maintenance of laboratory equipment such as: Class II Biological Hoods, CO2 incubators, light and confocal microscopes, centrifuges, spectrometers, shaker incubators, and PCR thermal cyclers
  • Support the Laboratory Manager in ensuring that physical and environmental conditions are appropriate for the research being performed
  • Provide and sustain a safe lab environment that protects investigators from physical and chemical hazards
  • Participate in the design and delivery of laboratory educational programs
  • Oversee management of the vivarium and animal facilities

Qualifications & Special Instructions to Applicants

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology or other related field required
  • Master's degree in laboratory sciences (biology or chemistry) preferred
  • 2-3 years of experience in providing scientific laboratory support and/or conducting laboratory investigations
  • Experience working with students in laboratory setting and collaboratively with faculty in an academic setting
  • Experience handling small animals and engaging in animal research
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually
  • Strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by written and verbal communication
  • Ability to meet goals and accomplish tasks with a high level of detail and accuracy
  • Knowledge of mammalian tissue culture, transfections, virus preparation for investigative purposes, microscopy, recombinant DNA technology, RNA work including real-time PCR and siRNA, immunoblots, Elisa, GST-capture and other molecular biology techniques
